What is Anxiety Disorder?
This is truly the age of anxiety disorder, but what is anxiety disorder? It's not just one thing. It is a catchall term which encompasses a number of different fears and insecurities that psychiatrists often see in their patients. Anxiety disorders typically manifest themselves in a variety of physical symptoms. Common symptoms are things such as heart palpitations, sweating, rapid and shallow breathing, dry mouth, diarrhea, and a heightened sense of discomfort. One reason that there has been such an explosion of anxiety disorders is that doctors have become much more adept at diagnosing the disease.
Although many people dismiss and laugh at this disease, an anxiety disorder is not something to be taken lightly. Left untreated, these disorders can result in much bigger problems down the road - mental as well as physical. If you believe that you're suffering from some form of anxiety, don't feel nervous or intimidated about making an appointment to see a specialist. And although some people do dismiss the disease, more and more people are recognizing it for the problem that it is. As a result, anxiety disorder has loss much of the stigma once associated with it.
Over the years psychiatrists have come to realize that an anxiety disorder may, in fact, be merely a symptom of other diseases like depression or alcoholism. And doctors have long correlated the use of certain drugs with increasing episodes of panic or anxiety attacks. Even mild items such as coffee or tea, can trigger anxiety disorders. In addition, the withdrawal of certain drugs, such as tranquilizers, can cause anxiety disorders as well. The big danger, of course, is that over medication a patient with subscription drugs, if not closely monitored, can easily escalate into drug dependencies and even more occurrences of anxiety attacks.
There are many distinct anxiety diagnoses. A few of the more common ones follow:
What is Separation Anxiety Disorder?
This is an anxiety that occurs when someone is separated from a person or object to which they have a close emotional attachment. Examples are a child's first day of pre-school where she is separated from her parent. Or a wife's separation anxiety when her husband is sent off to war. It's also worth noting that separation anxiety can also occur in animals - for example when a dog is left at a shelter for the weekend.
What is Social Anxiety Disorder
A perfect example of social anxiety disorder is the person who becomes terrified at the prospect of giving a speech in public. More extreme forms occur when the person becomes visibly discomforted at even approaching new people in a social situation.
What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized anxiety is simply worrying about things totally out of proportion to their effect on one in the real life. For example, a man going out on his first date with a woman may become so nervous and put so much pressure on himself that he's unable to really be his true self when he finally gets on the date. Many times the fear of an event is much worse than the actual event itself.
