1) Block out the noise - many times, a person will find it hard to get to sleep simply because of external noise factors. This is particularly true if your home is near a busy street or highway where the noise from passing cars are constantly intruding on your efforts to sleep. The same applies if you live in a high rise where foot traffic or noise from neighbors are constantly interrupting you. Or closer at home - if your partner is a heavy snorer or breather, you may have trouble getting to sleep as well.
In cases like this, many times the problem can be solved by simply purchasing a pair of ear plugs. Some of the ones on the market now not only fit comfortably in or over the ear, but they can cut the noise reduction significantly. Look for ear plugs which list the noise reduction rating in decibels on their packaging. The greater the noise reduction, the more external noise it will block out.

2) Block out the light - sometimes, the problem is not noise, but light. This is especially true if you work at night and sleep during the day. Biologically, humans have evolved to sleep at night - in the dark. As a result, many people have a difficult time falling asleep if there is too much daylight or artificial light around.
One solution is to simply use heavy drapes to block out light from the windows. Another is to purchase a quality sleep mask which doesn't irritate the skin, fits comfortably, is washable, and does a decent job of shutting out the light. For convenience, once you find a mask that you like, consider purchasing a second. This way you always have a spare when one is in the wash or when your are traveling and staying away from home.
3) Valerian - many people use the herb valerian as a stop gap solution. In fact, this herb actually an ingredient found in more than a few off the shelf sleep pills sold over the counter.
The benefit is that, for many people, it not only helps them to get to sleep, but they seem to sleep better as well. The principal drawback seems to be that when used continually, the body acclimates itself to it which cuts down on its effectiveness.
So, for long term sleep problems it may not be a solution. But for shorter periods of time, for many, it is one of the more effective home remedies for combating sleep disorders and chronic insomnia
4) Put yourself on a sleep schedule - with most things, the body likes to be on a schedule. If you eat at a certain time every day, as that time approaches, you will notice your body giving you hunger signals. The same is true with sleep. If you go to bed at the same time each night, and get up at the same time every morning, your body will eventually train itself to prepare for sleep at the chosen time.
Because of work commitments, many people do this already. As a result, their body adjusts to the schedule. And when that schedule is broken, it sometimes has trouble readjusting. So when you break that schedule on weekends by sleeping longer and staying up later, it's harder to get up on Monday. It is also why people experience jet lag and trouble sleeping after a long flight into a new time zone.
By putting yourself on a schedule, and sticking with it, you may find that your sleep problem gradually corrects itself.
5) Avoid stimulants - sometimes the cause for insomnia is simply that you are eating too many foods that stimulate the nervous system prior to going to bed.
If you are drinking caffeinated drinks - stop it. In fact, usually a great home remedy for insomnia is simply to stop engaging in behavior that aggravates the mind and/or body.
6) Resolve medical problems - many people have sleep problems because of some underlying medical condition. In many cases, they may even be unaware of the problem.
Sleep apnea is a perfect example. It is a condition in which a person will literally stop breathing for several seconds. Many people that have this condition will experience it several times when sleeping. Because they are continually being interrupted in their sleep, they never manage to get a full nights rest.
